"A perfect thriller!" -USA Today
Invited to Nightmute, Alaska, to head a murder case, veteran LAPD detective Will Dormer finds his investigation interrupted by an ever-shining midnight sun that wreaks sleep-depriving havoc on him- and by personal guilt over a second crime that may be real... or a figment of his increasingly unstable consciousness.
Director Christopher Nolan (Memento) crafts another jolting psychological thriller to remember, guiding Academy Award winners Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank in Insomnia. In the season of the midnight sun, no one- and no secret -can hide forever.

In the endless night a detective must face his fears - 4.75 out of 5 (10/15/2002)
It would appear that in far too many modern films the moviemakers ignore the fact that the audience is composed of intelligent human beings. This appears to be especially true in the often-misunderstood genre of the mystery. In most recent mysteries the clues are like huge red trucks in a suburban parking lot. There is no missing them and after seeing a film once there is no need or desire to return for another viewing. The high-water mark of this time honored genre is the ability to intellectua

excellent - 5 out of 5 (10/8/2002)
I have suffered from a mild form of INSOMNIA most of my adult life and I
find it interesting that most of my friends who are also of the creative
type suffer from a similar affliction.
We often have conversations where we discuss the fact that these sleepless
hours are usually the most fruitful and it is true that I don't really ever
hit my groove on writing until at least one or two in the morning, and that
too seems to be a constant between those I know.
But that mild for on INSOM

Robin Williams makes a wonderful villain! - 4.75 out of 5 (11/10/2003)
Robin Williams plays a great serious role as a slightly crazed novelist who kills a teenage girl in a small town in Alaska. Al Pacino is the big city cop from Los Angeles brought up to catch him.
The town, Night Mute, is the Halibut Fishing Capital of the world, but with its picturesque granite mountains in the backdrop, it looks as though the movie was shot in a larger version of Yosemite National Park, one of the most beautifully breathtaking places in the entire world.

Pacino phoned in his performance - 3 out of 5 (10/28/2002)
While I am a fan of Pacino's work, it appears that he took this movie off. I think the same can be said for the one-dimensional performance of Robin Williams. However, this is probably because of the material and lack of imagination of Mr. Nolan. He hit a home run with Memento and struck out with this film. The extras on the disc are lacking any real substance.

The Thriller of The Year - 4.5 out of 5 (10/17/2002)
Insomnia is the thriller of the year. Chris Nolan has once again made a thinker of a movie that has surpassed Memento.
